6. June 1944 at 0016 hours (0.16), the British Horsa gliders carrying 25 paratroopers, a crash landing near the Canal de Caen in northern France. During the early morning, U.S. Allied air-82A and 101 divisions along with the 6th British landed three in a targeted French beaches. This was the beginning of the D-Day ... a day that would change the course of history forever.
The landing areas in the small villages of Ouistreham Quinneville (extended beyond 50Miles). The Americans were to (code name for the landing beaches) "Utah and Omaha" and the British landed at Gold and Sword. Canadian troops landed on Juno Beach. The operation was planned in 1943, code-named "Overlord." The Germans expected the landing to the north, but the allies have chosen to go ashore in the bay of Seine. The area was less fortified than the banks of the Pas-de-Calais and gave Allied the element of surprise.
Between 0630 and 0730 hours,135,000 men and 20,000 vehicles landed in cold, rough seas along the five beaches. The objectives difficult for the D-Day operation were not achieved, but the whole mission was a success. The U.S. military has shown courage superb fighting impossible odds "Omaha Beach". The pre-dawn bombardment of German positions was a failure, as the Nazi machine guns, the Americans have put towards the sea. This was the most difficult and expensive of all the landing beaches.Accidents and casualties were extremely high and once the mission was on the brink, and to connect in a position to face the German counter-attacks were. A British fighter-bomber "Typhoon" mounted above the entrance welcomes visitors as "The Memorial" in force. The museum is bright, well located and a real tribute to the sacrifice of many. Two powerful film shownand most of the pictures are scenes of battle itself. The company that makes French films did a fantastic job.
The exhibition will bring the memory of this important place in history, in a very convincing way. A wedding dress in a boy with the inscription: "This dress was a French citizen of a parachute landing used during which one."
The finish is a walk through the U.S. Armed Forces Memorial Garden. Written on the sidewalk: "From the Heart our country runs the blood of our young people, in the name of freedom. "
