The French Riviera is Also a Favorite Place

'Nobody was in Antibes that summer ...except me, Zelda, the Valentinos, the Murphys, Mistinguet, Rex Ingram, Dos Passos, Alice Terry, the MacLeishes, Charlie Brackett, Mause Kahn, Lester Murphy, Marguerite Namara, E. Oppenheimer, Mannes the violinist, Floyd Dell, Max and Crystal Eastman ...'. Although F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote that in 1926, it still holds true today. Everybody comes to the French Riviera. And it's not difficult to see why. The French Riviera -- the very name conjures up visions of movie starlets stepping out of sports Mercedes, of shapely young women tanning topless on the beach, of elegant couples in dinner suits and evening gowns dining at small, stylish bistros, of multi-million-dollar mega yachts tied up at glamorous marinas, and of holidaying crowds wandering along the Promenade des Anglais, the famous waterfront street of Nice. And all these images would be correct, for the Riviera can be all things to all people -- a dream destination. Nice is the undisputed capital of the Cote d'Azur. Home to over three hundred and fifty thousand inhabitants and its own University, it is not only a year-round holiday destination but also a thriving commercial city.

Situated at a convenient junction along the French Riviera it is an excellent base for exploring the rest of this region including Monaco, St Tropez and Cannes. Nice hosts the world famous Nice Carnival in February as well as the King Carnival just before lent, which has been likened to New Orleans's Mardi Gras. When in Nice be sure to stroll slowly along the Promenade des Anglais. This must be the world's best place for people-watching. For glamour rating, St Tropez is as high as it gets. It's where ordinary people can rub shoulders with the A-list stars that come every summer to dangle off yachts and quaff Champagne. By the beginning of July, St-Tropez's tiny streets are packed with Ferraris, its harbor rammed with super-yachts. Everyone from Bill Clinton to the Beckhams comes on a regular basis, while Brigitte Bardot and Joan Collins both have houses here. Cannes has an international reputation for glamour - pictures and movie clips of its croisette, its film stars and its grand hotels instantly conjure up an image of style and sophistication. In May the Film Festival takes over.

The city is awash with film billboards, big cars, starlets posing without restraint for the paparazzi, private beach parties, balcony parties, private viewing parties (mostly films), more parties, and thousands of movie fans swarming the beaches and streets to catch a glimpse of the stars. Immortalized in F Scott Fitzgerald's 'Tender is the Night', the Cap d'Antibes is a long-time favorite of the great and the glamorous. Coco Chanel sunbathed here (at Plage de Paloma) and the rich and famous own houses on the peninsula. The Hotel Du Cap is the centre of it all. If possible, avoid the French Riviera in July and August, as it gets very crowded and very expensive, but for the rest of the year the Cote d'Azur is indeed the dream vacation.

Holiday Villages in France

There are various alternatives for people planning a vacation in France - hôtels, holiday rentals, camping and Holiday villages are among the most popular.

Hotels offer the advantage that everything is laid on - no cleaning to do or meals to prepare - and are often located in the best town centre locations. Holiday rentals provide a chance to stay in a typical house of the region, and give the freedom to come and go that may be missing with a hotel.

Camping holidays are a great way for a young family to visit France. Entertainments are usually laid on for adults and children alike, and most campsites offer bars, restaurants and swimming pools with slides and water games. Facilities depend, as always, on the price you pay.

Don't confuse these large family oriented campsites with 'camping a la ferme' (on the farm) French-style when you make your booking! Camping at a farm is a cheap, traditional camping experience where you pitch your tent in a field - and very few facilities beyond running water and toilets are made available.

The last main option is French holiday villages, and perhaps these offer the best of all possible worlds.

A well run modern holiday village offers numerous facilities with a selection of bars and restaurants, night-time amusements, day time entertainment, tennis and other sports, and a dazzling choice of pools and associated fun.

But on-site enjoyment is only part of a successful holiday. Sometimes you need to get away and enjoy the French countryside or beaches! The best of the villages are found in the best locations. Usually they are near the coast, perhaps the Cote d'Azur, the Atlantic surfing beaches or the beautiful scenery of the Brittany region, but sometimes they are located in the most impressive country ide such as the Dordogne or the Gorged de l'Ardeche.

Whichever type of holiday you are looking for you are sure to find it in France from one of the options above - just spend some time deciding what is best for you and your family to be sure you make the best possible choices.

The 10 Commandments of Beach Bumming

Ah. Can you feel it already? The invigorating smell of sea water, the sticky-fresh breeze, the sun beating down on your skin, the muted sounds, the gentle ebb of life. Very few people can resist the lure of the Beach.

It's fun to go on a vacation without any agenda, without any plans. For a few days of bliss, you get to live the life of a beach bum. But you have to remember, being a beach bum is an art form. The beach will be your home, and you have got to live it in the best way possible. If you're clueless on how to live the Beach Bum Life, then I suggest you start learning these commandments, because with them, you can't go wrong.

1. Thou shall pick the perfect beach.

It's not that hard really. Baja California in Mexico is one of the most diverse, and beautiful places to beach bum in. The beaches are made of fine white sand, the seafood is divine and there are a multitude of bars and nightclubs to party the night away. It doesn't hurt that it is located near the border, making it extremely accessible for those living in the California and San Diego area. If you're up for more upper-class beaches, then troop over to Hawaii, Ibiza or even in the French Riviera. The point is to pick a beach you can own.

2. Thou shall not peel or burn.

Nothing ruins a perfect day in the sun than badly-peeling, sun-burnt skin. Refrain from looking like a bad paint job, and get thee some sunscreen ASAP! Nothing wrong with slathering on the lotion, you'll thank us years later, when you're not dying from skin cancer.

3. Thou shall pack light.

Really. You're at the beach. All you need are bikinis or board shorts. Whatever else do you need? Okay, maybe you can pack for the nightly party at the bar. But you don't need tons of clothes for that. Pack light. With the heat of the sun, that's all you'll want to wear anyway.

4. Thou shall eat right.

And by right, we mean a lot. Of seafoods. Take advantage of your proximity to the beach. Get in touch with the marina flavor. Try out all kinds of fish, lobster, shrimps, clams, oysters. There are so many tastes and textures and flavors to enjoy from the seas. It doesn't have to be a gourmet dinner. A simple meal of fish cooked over an open fire will provide you with gastronomic delight you never imagined.

5. Thou shall learn to surf.

Oh come on. Don't tell me you can't resist riding the waves. Not even once? When you're atop that surfboard, it will be an exhilarating experience. Plus, all that paddling will help you lose those pounds you gained enjoying the island's fresh cuisine. Try surfing, lots of beaches have shops that offer lessons for beginners. Just don't come after us when you experience wiping out for the first time.

6. Thou shall build a bonfire on the beach.

At least for one night at the beach, build a bonfire, and spend a laid-back night underneath the stars. Gather up your friends, or cozy up to your sweetie. Toast some marshmallows, or toss back a couple of beers. It's a guaranteed activity you'll never forget.

7. Thou shall party all night.

Find the hottest spot on the area and dance the night away! It's a blast meeting new friends, and just letting it all out. Just be careful and you'll have the time of your lives.

8. Thou shall mingle with the locals.

Get some culture in your system. It's fun learning about the local's traditions, their habits and their culture in general. You'll get pointers on living in the area, and you may even get the inside info on the good buys on the island, and save a fortune by avoiding tourist prices.

9. Thou shall take lots and lots and lots of pictures.

You know what they say, "If we don't see pictures, it didn't happen."

10. Thou shall have the absolute best fun possible.

If we need to explain this, then you're too uptight to be a beach bum.
