Living as an expat on the French Riviera may sound a glamorous life, but when funds are low and the finances dwindling, how can you keep up the lifestyle?

For me it was simple - I re-arranged my lifestyle from trendy London fashionite, living on the edge of Primrose Hill, to a new bohemian style of living on the budget on a student in the "artists ghetto" area of Nice Old Town. My French partner and I left the UK and arrived in Southern France in the summer of 2008.

When we first arrived, it was the height of the summer, and it felt like a holiday everyday. On our doorstep is the famous Cours Saleya Market Square, which has a wonderful vibe to it - cafe society. We often would eat out twice a day, maybe have lunch on the beach, then dinner out at night. However after a couple of exotic months we realised we were living way beyond our means and had to take stock before our overdrafts and credit cards were maxed to the limit.

I overhauled our spending, striping down to the very basics and worked out we could live of 10 euros a day each on food. We are fairly health conscious; so do not resort to frozen meals or ready-cooked supermarket dishes. I' started to cook a lot more, and even though we only have a hotplate to heat things, no oven or grill, we now are surviving and enjoying our food at home more than the over priced local tourist restaurants.

In winter lunches consist of home made veggie soup (tomato and basil with cream frais is the favourite) or some kind of egg dish. In summer this would be tomato and basil salad with mozzarella, or a salad nicoise with hard-boiled egg. We have a few simple pasta dishes, mushroom and bacon, mushroom risotto, or chorizo and lentil stew. Summer we would have warm chorizo and squid salad. To keep the carbs at bay we order a demi(half) baguette each day for 0.40euros.

The few British supplies we buy are Earl Grey tea and the occasional tin of baked beans. As we work at home, one thing we treasure is our daily jaunt to the local open-air cafe for an espresso. If its cold, we'll sometimes have tea and biscuits around 4pm, or pop round the local boulangerie and splash out on a tasty French gateaux.

All in all we are both much happier here and healthier. The air is so clean compared to London, and the wonderful relaxed atmosphere makes up for our student-type new way of expat life.

If you like to shop, Phillipsburg in Dutch St. Maarten is fabulous for duty-free shopping. In fact, the prices in St. Maarten are as good if not better than in St. Thomas, long rumored to be the best place to shop for jewelry, cameras and electronics the Caribbean. Upon disembarking in St. Maarten, you will be pleasantly surprised when you see the new vibrantly colored buildings at the port. It's a mini-shopping destination. The prices at these shops are just as good as in Phillipsburg, the largest city in St. Maarten. The bustling town of Phillipsburg is worth seeing and the water taxi to get there is right at the pier. Last time I visited St. Maarten, the water taxi charged $6 per person each way for the quick ride across the harbor. As it runs every 30 minutes, you can easily gauge your time in town to get you back to your ship before the gangway is raised. Once in Phillipsburg, there are plenty of dining options all along Front Street; from standard fare to excellent curry and island cuisine. Of course, Heineken is the Dutch beer of choice and it is locally brewed.

To distinguish their half of the island, the French renamed their side St. Martin. Marigot is the capital and is the largest town on the island. Marigot is very charming and very French. Bistros and cafes line the walkway along the harbor. Trendy French boutiques with designer clothes are a bit pricier than the island style of dress in St. Maarten. Less hectic than Phillipsburg, Marigot is a lovely little town to walk around, stop in the art galleries to browse and have a cappuccino along the pier.

St. Martin is known for its beautiful beaches and warm, calm waters. As many of the beaches are more secluded, they attract visitors in search of quiet relaxation. The most popular beach is Orient Beach. Be warned...there are areas of Orient Beach that are clothing optional. However, no one really seems to care.

From the port, it's a 15 minute cab ride to Orient Beach. I have the driver drop me off at the Bikini Beach area at Orient Beach. It is more family-friendly and there are water toys to rent. My favorite place is the French open-air, on-the-beach restaurant, Kakao. You can easily find Kakao as it is located in the area of blue beach umbrellas. My favorite dish is the steamed mussels in garlic and wine accompanied by a glass of cold, crisp Chardonnay. This place is very popular with Europeans and French is commonly spoken. The seating is on rustic wood benches and the furnishings include artifacts from demolished or sunken yachts. If mussels aren't your thing, there are other French dishes plus steaks, burgers and pizza. Kakao is very family-friendly and not as boisterous as Kon Tiki next door. After lunch, you can cut across the beach to a very small shopping area. Actually, the shops there are for the benefit of guests who are staying in one of the hundreds of vacation rentals. The little French grocery store has gorgeous French pastries and a variety of breads and croissants. A must-do for a really decadent walk-away dessert.

If you're up for touring, take a taxi to Grand Case on the northwest corner of the island. Known as the Gastronomic Capital, Grand Case is a small fishing village with small wooden pastel-colored houses and over 30 sidewalk cafes, brasseries and bistros lining the main road. If you've brought your beach gear, after lunch you can stretch out and relax on Grand Case Beach.

Heading back to the ship means saying good-bye to a unique and special island. If you are taking a taxi back to the ship, be sure to allow extra time for traffic jams along the way. And don't forget to buy a wheel of Gouda cheese. Yes, you can buy the same cheese at Winn-Dixie and Publix, but the fun is trying to cram a ten-pound wheel of cheese into the mini-fridge in your stateroom!

You'll be amazed at how different the cultures are within only a 30-minute taxi ride. As you cross into the French side, you'll see "Bienvenue en Partie Française" and coming back the border sign greets you with "Welcome to Dutch Sint Maarten, N.A." So, the next time you choose a cruise with an eastern Caribbean itinerary, find one that includes St. Maarten. It's an island worth visiting again and again.

The Day Diana Died - Moorea, French Polynesia, South Pacific

'Princess Diana, the Princess of Wales, died today in a motor car accident in France'
These shattering words boom out from the speaker and our crew look at one another in stunned silence. Suddenly, the gloss has gone off this day and their work gets forgotten in the face of this sad event. Instead, they jump into the dinghy and go ashore to find a café where, in some sense they can share their grief with some other humans. Some hundreds of metres along the road they come across a dilapidated, but brightly painted and cheerful café beside the lagoon, and step through the multi coloured plastic fly strips fluttering in the breezes lazy draught . A small group of locals are clustered around a table, silent and staring at an ancient television screen. Our crew settle at an even more ancient table, saw dusty white with age. The soft grain of wood has been worn away over the years, leaving the dark, harder grain, standing up in wavy, parallel ridges. The greater cracks in the table top are comfortably filled with innumerable dried out baguette and croissant crumbs - currently being nibbled on by several desultory black ants. This is taken in, in a second, but appears to be in slow motion - funny how the human mind can take in all this detail when focussing deeply on another matter entirely - there is truth that in times of extreme events, ones life can parade before ones eyes.

The locals at the other table are talking in whispers and the two girls have been crying, still clutching their tissues and occasionally dabbing at their cheeks. The screen is wavering, but fixed permanently on a grey scene at the gates of Kensington Palace, where already, there is a mountain of flowers. Transmission has been interrupted, and in the flickering image a hand is frozen in perpetuity, placing a bouquet onto the mass of floral tributes. The grey, colourless August day in England contrasts with the warm and sunny clime of Moorea, giving a surreal effect to the whole scene. Our crew are now on nodding terms with the other table and everyone points to the locked image on the flickering screen, shaking their heads and clucking sympathetically. Several French phrases are exchanged, but the limitations of schooldays' rememberings soon bring them to a stuttering halt and all eyes return once more to the frozen image. After a salutary coffee being drunk and departures made, our crew once more step out into the sunshine and walk along the foreshore, discussing this gloomy and heart rending event. They express their surprise that in this little outpost of French colonialism, the death of this iconic lady could have such a profound effect on their daily lives that they would sit for hours, staring blankly at an unchanging picture, talking in whispers only. The argument that because it happened on French soil, could be pursued, but seeing the state of the young ladies and the sombre tone of their table mates, it went much deeper than this. Diana is obviously revered for who she was, not just what she represented - the fortunes and misfortunes of the rich and famous being followed avidly in the tiniest corners of the globe and at some level overcoming international barriers and differences.

Dinner that night was a sober affair, with conversation continually returning to the tragedy, the how's and why's being filled in from time to time from the ongoing broadcasts from the BBC on the short wave radio. A toast was drunk so that she may rest in peace. In life, she was an enigma, in death she becomes something approaching a saint.

A Visit to Beaches Resort - Turks/Caicos

We recently did a site visit to Beaches Resort in the Turks/Caicos. This is an all inclusive resort for families and what a wonderful place it was!

We arrived in Provo and were taken to the resort via mini-van. A Beaches rep. was on hand to greet us at the airport. Beaches is approximately 10 - 15 minutes from the airport. Upon pulling into the resort, you will be delivered to the "village" that your room is located in to check in- either the Caribbean Village (the oldest part of the resort but with magnificent ocean views), the French Village (beautiful garden views, no water view at all) or the newest village, the Italian Village.

Our room was in the French Village in a two room suite, rooms 1304 and 1305. 1304 was the bedroom and upon walking in, a bathroom with double sinks and full tub was on the left. One sink was outside the bathroom, another inside. A large closet with safe and luggage valet was also located here. In the bathroom was a wonderful supply of Red Lane Spa toiletries - shampoo conditioner, body lotion and aloe vera (for sunburn!). Not small sample sizes - actual 4 oz. bottle of each item, a real luxury!

Further into the room was a beautiful four poster king size Jamaican bed (on a platform, no boxspring). There were two nightstands with drawers, a huge flat screen t.v. on a dresser with six large drawers. Past the bed in a corner near the window was a gorgeous pull out bed so you can put two more people into this room.

In the adjoining room was a living room with two pullout couches and similar dresser amenities. Another flat screen t.v. and bathroom were in this room as well. You can fit three to four people on the pullout couches.

Outside our room was a wonderful zero entry pool (unheated but will be heated sometime in the near future), a huge hot tub and swim up bar.

There several restaurants in this area - Le Petite Chateau,serving French Food, Cafe de Paris, where we enjoyed wonderful pastries and specialty coffees, and Guiseppe's, an Italian Restaurant.

Walking from the French Village straight to the water, you will arrive at the Waterpark, which house Pirates Island, waterslides, and a surf simulator. There was also an outdoor stage area where shows happen almost every night. And rest assured, the outdoor shows are over by 9:45 PM. There is also Octopus, a swim up kids bar in this area.

For teens, there is also an XBOX 360 Game, a Scratch DJ Academy and Liquid, their very own nightclub.

Also in this area are three restaurants, Bobby D's, a 50's theme diner style restaurant (great chicken nuggets here!), the Sushi Bar and Kimonos Restaurant. (You need reservations for Kimonos).

The Red Lane Spa and Fitness Area is also a left hand turn from the French Resort. This spa has the normal spa amenities, such as massages, facials, wraps, etc. The air smelled wonderful!

Walking toward the water behind the Waterpark is the newly opened Italian Village. There is a huge pool that is lit beautifully at night (and is heated). The Italian Village features two and six story building featuring suites. There is a Octagonal Bar as you walk into the Village from the Italian Village check in area and of course a swim up bar at the pool.

Many restaurants are located in this area as well. There is an Italian Restaurant, a Pub (where we had a terrific dinner and was uncrowded) and Barefoot by the Sea, a seaside restaurant on the beach.

The the left of the Italian Village is the Caribbean Village, which was the first part of the resort. There are several buildings with many rooms here, from villas to . The kids play area is located here. There is a parade in the early evening that the kids can participate in.

Also in this area are several restaurants, Sapodillas, Arizonas, Reflections and Schooners. There are several pools, the Octupus Swim Up Bar and Turtles Lounge.

Beaches hosts wedding at the resort and there are several chapel areas on the beach which provide a lovely backdrop for pictures.

How about free scuba diving? Canoes and kayaks, windsurfing, sail boats and hobie cats, and hydrobikes. All included. On land you can find table tennis, croquet, lawn chess,beach volleyball and billiards.

For the kids, there is a staffed nursery, supervised activities (we were participants in a scavenger hunt) and Sesame Street characters. Our observation of the kids activities showed us kids having a wonderful time and excellent staff members.

Beaches allows no tipping and we found the service impeccable, from check in to dining and bar servers. The dress code is casual wear during the day and a bit dressier at night - we saw men in long pants and golf shirts at the fancier restaurants.

The city of Nice is located on the French Riviera in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur. Among its many attractions are its beautiful beaches, lovely seaside promenades, interesting museums and famous landmarks but perhaps it is best known for the Cannes Film Festival, which is usually held in the month of May at the Palais des Festivals et des Congres. Renting a villa in Nice during this period can be almost impossible but, providing you plan ahead and have some inside information, you can find a beautiful and relaxing place to stay at a reasonable price.

How do I find a Villa?

Well, the simplest method of course is to go online and find it using a search engine but that may not be the best way to do it, simply because there seem to be so many different organisations and agencies representing the villas that are available for rent. It is far better if you try and contact the owner of the villa directly, that way you can get the best price and actually get a 'feel' from the owner as to the villa's suitability for your purposes. It might also be much easier to negotiate a discount with the owner, especially in today's troubled economic climate!

How do I find the Actual Owner of the Villa?

Well, we unfortunately have to come back to the magical search engine, but it is by far the best method these days; start off by typing "villa rental nice" (don't type "nice villa rental" in as will get a long list of rather fetching villas around the world!) into your preferred Search Engine (Google by far is the best for this) but make sure you have selected the 'world' option. If you want to make sure you are speaking to someone in the same language as your own, then narrow the search to your country of origin. That will usually, but not always, work. You will then see that your search returns a long list of agencies and holiday companies. They're easy to spot with a simple examination of their domain name.

The next step is to pick one of these at random and click on it. Depending on the organisation involved, they may have listed the names of every villa available and the website of that particular villa. If they have done this, you're fixed! But this is quite rare, so here's what you do: Write down the names of any of the villas that you are interested in. Then enter a new search, entering the actual name of the villa itself. Rather frustratingly, you will probably be returned a long list of agencies again, but if you sift carefully through the results, you will find the actual website that belongs to the Villa owners.

Voila! Give them a call and negotiate away! Another way of finding the actual owner is to use something like Yell.com. If you conduct a search in yell.com using the villa name then very often there will be a direct link to the owner's website or at least give you a telephone number; the owner can then tell you their website URL so that you can see how it looks. Alternatively, if you are a good French speaker, then call the Nice tourist board (get their current telephone number by conducting a web search for "France government tourist information office"; they are listed number one on Google) and ask them to give (or email you) a list of villas available to rent. If you are looking for somewhere new to visit in France, there are sure to be plenty of fascinating places that you haven't visited, and perhaps never even considered as a holiday destination. But the real pleasure of a visit to France is in discovering these less know corners, and a France that has escaped the crowds of the better known resorts. The following are a few suggestions:

The Lot department

Just east of the Dordogne department, the Lot is much less well know but every bit as beautiful as its famous neighbour. Forested hills and small scale farming are typical of the countryside, traversed by numerous small rivers and dotted with beautiful traditional villages.

The Atlantic Coast

Find the beaches of the Cote d'Azur too busy? Head to the Atlantic coast of Aquitaine. There are 200 kilometres of fine sandy beach spreading from the attractive 19th century town of Biarritz and all the way to Arcachon, to the west of Bordeaux , passing by the Dune de Pilat- the largest sand dune in Europe. Note that Bordeaux itself has been extensively rénovâtes and transformed during the last few years and is now a very impressive city.

Inland Provence

Many tourists flock to the perched villages of Provence and the Luberon, to discover the great beauty of the region. But for somewhere a little quieter head to the region between the coast and the Gorges du Verdon. In the region around the villlage of Tourtour there are numerous small Provencal towns to discover, such as Aups and Flayosc, along with attractive scenery, and of course the dramatic Gorges du Verdon themselves.

Gascony

The name Gascony is a historial one, that corresponds roughly to the current Gers department. Falling between the Pyrenees to the south and the Lot-et-Garonne and Dordogne départements to the north, the region is best know as a place to enjoy the peace and quiet, to quietly appreciate birds flying overhead, to look across fields of sunflowers...and to forget whatever stresses you left behind. There are also a sprinkling of market towns and villages to explore - be sure to visit the fortified village of Larressingle.

Brittany

Not exactly unknown to visitons to France, Brittany still has much to discover, and it is still pretty easy to escape the crowds. There are two main options for finding tranquility in Brittany:

1) Head west, to the furthest reaches of Finistere, to explore the dramatic coastline and small fishing villages

2) Stay inland, because a few kilometres from the coast the Cornish countryside is very pretty, very traditional, and still relatively undiscovered and unexplored.

Living on the French Riviera - A Beach For All Seasons

If you do decided to live the expat life in France in a coastal town, you will find there is not only the weather to report back home, but the daily changes that happen to the beach.

As January comes to an end, the beach of Nice is on the move! Throughout winter there have been a couple of storms, a week of wild seas over Xmas, and many tranquil days that brings out the beachcombers.

The beach cafes start closing down during October. Everyday there are workmen taking down the parasols, sun loungers and dining tables and storing them in the vast caverns under the Prom, then battling down the hatches ready for the winter seas. One famous beach restaurant, Castel, lifts its whole facade with a crane then moves it to storage in a warehouse. We know spring has arrived when the crane returns and the cafe is reassembled. Throughout the sunny winter days the local sun worshippers gather under its sign as it is a great suntrap.

What is most interesting is how the pebble beach gets moved around so much from the action of the tides. Sometimes the sea will hide the beach altogether and create a white froth that reaches the sea wall, moving the pebbles with it. By December the beach can get so high, the showers stick out the top as though they are just for children!

With Nice carnival only 12 days away, the beaches are coming alive again. Yes, when you see a poster of a young Marilyn Monroe, it is easy to be swept up in life's classic forms. The woman is astounding because they can do all that they do physically, AND have estrogen and be utterly functionally equipped to do all that life throws their way. And the beauty of the male can be summed up in a sculpture of David, or just appreciated as a young athlete speeds across a field, free of any of life's worries as the wind bounces his locks in free abandon.

The Bong

This word begins with a "B", and the intention is to sum up sensuality in all of its many forms. The Bong is our pronouncement that we were given a carousel of sensors that wire us in such a fashion that we can feel the passing of a tiny breeze, the sound of a fruitfly, the drunken feeling of so many diverse substances that it you would need an encyclopedia.

Before you get your legal sensibilities all in a flight, or your hedonistic impulses burning, stop for a minute and say to yourself. This is a delicate topic because of crime and politics and probably the most controversial of the "Life is" topics, but that controversy itself tells us that there is much complexity in us, much of it we gloss over, much of it we moralize over, much of it we paint over, much of it we obscure. Very little of this broad topic falls under quiet consideration and we can just leave it at that.

Ceremony's Sake

Perhaps the best way to comment on the "drug" question and the "substance" question is to observe that many things in ancient history were used in ceremonial situations. Today, we tend to mass produce, mass consume and become utterly spent because we "take it to the limit" when it should be sniffed or sipped. That is a comment on our Age as much as it is a comment on the "Substances". I know one individual who drinks several glasses of tequila on certain occasions. He calls it his ceremonial drink. He never drives after these occasions and goes at it with a near reverence. He only does this about two or three times a year.

The "Bong" of life is a big biological challenge too. Many of these substances are harmless at one level and downright killing at other levels. Then there are tobacco and poppy that have been the scourge of the species. Again, these problems tell us more about ourselves than the substances do. "Many a slip between tongue and lip" is an old folk saying because it shows us the dangerous probabilities that lie at our door constantly. Danger, danger and more danger sit right next to serene, consciousness-altering gentle inebriation. Life is definitely scary in this regard. It should make us more reverent, but somehow it tends not to.

The Beach

The Setting. Ah, yes WHERE we do our living has so much to do with what life is. Being able to have a "roof over our heads" and get the basic pleasures of life is such a precious goal. It makes life what we dream about. Turning over in our sheets and kissing the one we love. Napping on a sun-soaked beach, screaming madly at a ball game, chatting around a table at a bar, or asking for God's blessing around a massive Thanksgiving table, all become the "beach" of our lives. In poorer countries, homes are built of tin and leaves, and concrete bricks and scrap wood. Not to compare structures, but the "beach" tells us that a happy family can live in very small cube, and a howling angry couple can echo their epithets in a 10,000 square foot castle. "Here on earth have we not continuing place", as is declared in the Book of Hebrews, and this saying does make us be grateful for the homes and houses that we do have.

It Is Sure We Can Take Nothing Out...

Life is for our Training. It is not for grabbing the best car, or planting ourselves in the nicest house. It is not for adorning or cluttering our beach with super bongs and beauties that don't know our names. It is not a Boot Camp for getting out of, it is a Boot Camp for getting into. The Boot Camp and the Bong with the Beauty on the Beach is not to be consumed by. It is for our peaceable pleasure. Long has the humorous cultural battle between the English and the French continued, with each declaring the other to be without culture, style or both! Criticisms have been levelled at both countries, with each believing themselves to be superior. These friendly neighbours have often exchanged jibes about their perceived characteristics, but car manufacturer Renault has finally gotten a few things straight with a poll of over 4,000 people.

The English and French participants were surveyed to find out what each nationality thinks of the other. According to the survey, most French people associated Englishness with the thought of a man on a mobility scooter wearing a flat cap. They also thought that English people were rather fond of processed cheese. When asked what British people were "not good at" the French participants replied with a range of activities from cooking, to love or even to the way they dress. Speaking French was also cited as something the Brits do not excel at in the eyes of their neighbours.

Surprisingly, however, British participants couldn't name anything that the French were particularly bad at, except for perhaps "getting anything done in August". Other amusing thoughts on the French were that they enjoyed going on strike and liked to boast about how good their train network is.
